Un copac originar din China, cu ramuri principale care se întind pe scară largă, creând o coroană largă, rotundă și oarecum ondulată. Scoarța este gri-maronie și se desprinde în foițe lungi și înguste. Lemnul dur al crengilor este fragil. Frunza este foarte diferită de cea a C. bignonioides. Este în formă de inimă cu trei până la cinci lobi unghiulari distincți, are vârful ascuțit și este în întregime netedă. Partea inferioară a frunzei este albastru-verzui și asemănătoare cu pâsla. Frunzele apar abia la sfârșitul primăverii și cad relativ devreme în toamnă. Vânătăile degajă un miros caracteristic. Florile ușor parfumate sunt mici și de culoare albă până la galben deschis. Acestea au pete și dungi de culoare brun-roșcată până la purpurie. Fructele de cutie au o lățime de până la 1 cm și atârnă în mănunchiuri. Acestea rămân pe copac și iarna.
