Arbore mare, cu coroana neregulată, originar de pe versanții muntoși răcoroși și ușor umezi din sudul și centrul Europei, nordul Africii și unele părți ale Asiei. Coroana poate crește până la 25 m lățime. Trunchiul greoi, scurt și de culoare gri închis se rotește (se răsucește) pe axa sa, determinând canelurile adânci din scoarță să se rotească odată cu el. Ramurile tinere sunt de culoare verde măsliniu, dar în curând devin brun-roșcate. Frunzele alungite sunt de culoare verde închis și lucioase, cu marginea frunzelor distinct zimțată. Frunzele tinere sunt asemănătoare cu pâsla pe partea inferioară. Este un arbore monoic, cu flori masculine albe și parfumate, grupate în ciorchini de până la 13 cm lungime. Florile feminine sunt mici și verzi, acestea nu sunt foarte vizibile. Fructele sunt comestibile. Arborele are rădăcini adânci și largi. Castanea sativa este un important producător de lemn.
