Copac minunat de dimensiuni mici și mijlocii, cu ramuri grațios arcuite, formând o coroană rotundă. Crengile anuale sunt de culoare verde măsliniu, iar scoarța mai veche este gri închis. Frunzele sunt adânc venate, de culoare verde închis pe partea superioară și de un verde strălucitor de deschis pe partea inferioară. Produce puține culori de toamnă. Cătănițele de flori sunt discrete, dar cătănițele fructifere de culoare verde deschis sunt formate din bractee relativ mari. În general, se formează mai mulți ghiocei fructiferi. Creșterea rădăcinilor este destul de superficială. Are puține cerințe față de sol, dar se simte cel mai bine în soluri argiloase. Frunzele digerate sunt un bun balsam de sol.
