Arbore de înălțime medie, cu creștere rapidă, cu coroana îngustă, ascuțită, care poate deveni mai largă, chiar rotundă, pe măsură ce copacul îmbătrânește. În sălbăticie, se întâlnesc uneori exemplare de 30 m. Scoarța este gălbuie până la gri argintiu și se descuamează. Scoarța mai bătrână devine brun-roșiatică.
