Arbore robust cu creștere rapidă, un hibrid între A. japonica și A. subcordata. Inițial, ramurile cresc drept în sus, mai târziu îndoindu-se orizontal. Ramurile tinere sunt de culoare verde-cenușie, iar cele mai bătrâne devin verde-maroniu și au multe lenticule. Mugurii de frunze sunt pe tulpini mici. Frunzele împrăștiate, puternic zimțate și de culoare verde închis cresc până la aproximativ 15 cm și se desfac purpurii. Este alungită până la ovală, apare la începutul primăverii și rămâne pe copac pentru o perioadă lungă de timp. Primii ghiocei de culoare galben-maronie apar adesea încă de la sfârșitul lunii ianuarie. Crește pe toate tipurile de sol și este foarte rezistent. Nu are probleme cu vântul (de mare). Alnus spaethii este un arin foarte apreciat și frecvent utilizat, găsit de Ludwig Späth în Arboretul Späth de lângă Späth Baumschulen din Berlin.
