Alnus cordata este originar din Italia și din unele părți ale Greciei. Este un arbore viguros, care poate ajunge în cele din urmă la o înălțime de 15 m. Se caracterizează prin ramuri laterale care stau aproape orizontal. Din mugurii împrăștiați, care stau pe tulpini scurte, apar frunze mari de până la 12 cm, în formă de inimă, a căror suprafață superioară este verde și lucioasă.
