Acer pseudoplatanus este un arbore impunător, cu coroana densă și ondulată. Formele coroanei pot varia în cazul puieților. Exemplarele mature ating 40 m înălțime și 500 de ani. Are mugurii de frunze verzi, ceea ce diferă izbitor de A. platanoides, care are mugurii de frunze roșii. Tulpina decorativă de culoare gri se desprinde în plăci mici. Pețiolul nu conține sevă lăptoasă, o diferență importantă față de A. platanoides. Frunza este verde pe partea superioară, iar pe partea inferioară are părul cenușiu. Culoarea de toamnă este galben-aurie, mai puțin atractivă decât la A. platanoides. Aripile fructelor de nucă sunt în unghiuri drepte spre acute una față de cealaltă. La A. platanoides, acesta este un unghi larg. Înrădăcinare adâncă. Tolerează solurile umede și reci și nu poate fi scufundat pentru perioade lungi de timp. Potrivit pentru zonele industriale și de coastă. Oarecum sensibil la sarea de drum.
