Acer palmatum este un arbust mare cu creștere lentă până la un arbore mic cu mai multe tulpini, care poate atinge o înălțime de aproximativ 10 m, rareori până la 15 m. Coroana este uneori la fel de largă ca și înălțimea. Frunza, ușor canelată, este lobată palmat cu cinci până la șapte (uneori nouă) lobi. Aceștia sunt lungi și ascuțiți. Toamna devine roșie-maronie până la roșu-portocaliu. A. palmatum este o specie foarte bine conturată, care se dezvoltă cel mai bine în soluri nisipoase bine drenate și umede. O locație la semiumbră este cea mai bună, dar va fi tolerat și un loc însorit. Planta poate fi folosită în grădini, parcuri și ca solitar.
