Acer griseum crește încet de la un arbust mare la un arbore de dimensiuni mici sau medii, adesea cu mai multe tulpini, care ajunge la o înălțime de aproximativ 10 m (rareori mai mare). Caracteristica sa principală și, de asemenea, cea mai mare valoare ornamentală este scoarța sa de culoare maro-canelină, care, la fel ca la mesteacăn, se desprinde puternic.
