Abies grandis este o specie cu creștere rapidă, care poate atinge cu siguranță înălțimi mari în zona sa naturală. În unele cazuri, chiar până la 60 m sau mai mult. Copacii tineri au o coroană piramidală îngustă, care mai târziu devine mai columnară. Ramurile care cresc orizontal apar din trunchiul neted de culoare gri-maronie. Crenguțele anuale sunt de culoare verde-oliv, devenind mai târziu brun-roșcat închis. Mugurii conțin multă rășină. Acele lucioase de culoare verde închis sunt dispuse vizibil plate și au două dungi albe pe partea inferioară. Conurile drepte au o lungime de 10 - 12 cm și o grosime de aproximativ 4 cm. La arborii încă tineri, acestea sunt verzi; exemplarele mai bătrâne poartă conuri galben-maronii. Abies grandis are o bună toleranță la umbră și este un important furnizor de lemn.
