Spoor Noord is a district in full bloom, a green lung in the north of the city. It was here where the Artesis Plantijn University built a new campus. The modern design of the Campus Spoor Noord connects perfectly with the newly created oasis in the city by adding green shades such as ecological roofs, a patio and a courtyard.
Stramien cvba incorporated multi-stem Cornus officinalis in their design. In 2015 H4A constructed the patio-roof garden and took care of the planting of the Cornus. They are planted in a special structure for park roofs: separated from the 15 cm top layer, with a substrate adapted for perennials, the Cornus have over 60 m3 of adapted substrate in the substructure. The plant beds feature a drip irrigation system and each bed can be separately regulated to allow for the differences in sunshine and shade. The irrigation system is fitted with a moisture sensor which switches of the flow of water when a certain level is reached, with the exception of nebulisers which freshen everything up each morning.
In the first growing year, H4A checked the irrigation and demand for it every two weeks and programmed the computer according to visual observations and readings from the moisture sensor. The Cornus root balls were injected during the first growing season and then sprayed with a solution of humic acid and fertiliser. In the second season, you can already see that the Cornus is well established and that the root ball has grown enough for the tree to take care of its own moisture intake.
